Matthew Gately grew up in Western Sydney. He picked up the trumpet at age 8 as part of a school concert band program. As his interest grew he was accepted into the Conservatorium of Music High school where he studied with Lou Campbell, Richard Montz, and Paul Goodchild. While studying a Bachelor of Music he performed regularly throughout Sydney in jazz and latin jazz groups, as well as with Penrith Symphony orchestra. During this time Matthew was founder and director of “Musix with Music”, a Sydney-based business which provided band solutions and tuition to several schools around the Sydney area for 7 years. During this time Matthew oversaw tuition of over 400 students, while managing 14 tutors. On top of being the founding conductor of the Mountain Youth Band, Central West Brass, and several school bands in Sydney and the Riverina, Matthew has performance experience in orchestras, musical pit orchestras, concert bands, big bands, latin bands, jazz ensembles, and a variety of brass ensembles for over 20 years.
With over 20 years trumpet teaching and conducting experience, Matthew has taught and conducted many students from their first lesson though AMEB examinations, and on to University. In 2010 Matthew was a finalist for the St Mary’s Brass Band “Australian Brass Conducting Scholarship”. At the beginning of 2011 Matthew was appointed the position of Conductor and Brass tutor at the Rivina Conservatorium of Music.
With over 20 State and National solo awards, Matthew has established himself as a high-quality performer on Trumpet and Cornet. His focus is on Classical and Baroque repertoire, and finds inspiration from trumpeters like Gabor Tarkovi, Ole Edvard Antonsen, and Alison Balsom.
Matthew began his performing career in Sydney as a Latin Jazz performer in the later 90’s. Sadly this came to an end when a severe motorcycle accident prevented him from picking up a trumpet for 6 years. 8 years ago Matthew began rehabilitation on trumpet via classical and modern solo repertoire. In his effort to establish himself as a soloist he competed in State and National solo competitions. He is currently undefeated NSW trumpet champion, 6 years running. Matthew has been awarded the esteemed LTCL and FTCL diplomas and has recently commenced a Masters degree at Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Matthew has performed with National Australian Brass Band, some of Australia’s best A-grade brass bands, and has been invited as a guest artist in Australian and New Zealand for National band competitions. He was a featured solist with Macquarie Philharmonia’s 2016 regional tour where he performed the Haydn Trumpet Concerto.
Matthew has been Principal trumpet of Macquarie Philharmonia since 2011, and appointed to Principal trumpet with Strathfield Symphony Orchestra in 2017, and is music director of Central West Brass.
Matthew teaches in Sydney (weekdays), and in Orange (weekends).
Matthew enjoys playing chess.
